School Calendar Reminders - Impacts of Winter Weather

A reminder of the notes at the bottom of the School Calendar :

  1. If school is delayed on a scheduled Early Release day, the early release will not occur and school will be session until 3:30pm.
  2. For every school cancellation day, add a day to the last day of school listed on the 2019/20 CRES School Calendar.

Did You Know . . .?

Planned Family Absence:

When a family plans an absence from CRES while school is in session, the family must notify the Principal in writing or by email in advance of the absence.

Procedures depending on the length of the absence:

A. One to twenty days:

a. After approval from administration, parent notifies teachers.

b. Teachers have the following options for missed work:

i. Provide assignments before departure.

ii. Assign an alternative assignment.

iii. Require student to make up work upon his/her return.

c. This make-up work must be completed within one week of the student’s return to school unless other arrangements are made with the teacher(s). Teachers will not be able to re-teach missed work.

B. Over twenty days:

a. For a planned absence of more than 20 consecutive days, parents are responsible for their child’s education. They will need to fill out paperwork with the state to home-school their child. The student will be unenrolled from CRES for the duration of the time they are home-schooled and re-enrolled upon their return.

Presenting……. Winter Recess Clothing!

Here are the rules and expectations for recess on the playground.

Students are expected to go outside for recess — weather permitting. We do go outside when it is cold!  At CRES, students go outside as long as the “feels like” temperature is 0 degrees Fahrenheit or higher. This requires proper clothing and footwear.

5 items of winter clothing are required when the weather is cold:

  1. Coat / Jacket
  2. Hat
  3. Mittens
  4. Snowpants
  5. Boots

Please make sure your student arrives to school each day with these 5 items. Students are welcome to keep a set in their locker.

Our nurse has a limited number of items available to borrow (and return!) on a given day. If you need help providing winter outerwear to your student, let us know. Talk to your child’s teacher, the Main Office, or the nurse.

Kids outgrown their ski equipment? Got some old ice skates kicking around the garage that you’ve been meaning to sell? Looking for some great deals to outfit the family for winter snow sports? If so, the annual Camden Hills Regional High School Ski Team Ski Sale at Camden Hills Regional High School this November 22th-24th is the place for you. This is an excellent opportunity to make some money on snow sport equipment that is outgrown or no longer used. At the same time, you can get some great deals on used equipment such as skis (both nordic and alpine), boots, poles, snowboards, skates, helmets, skates, etc.

On Sunday between noon and 1:30 pm, pick up a check for 75% of what was sold and take home any items that didn’t sell. One-Of-A-Kind Chris Van Dusen Print To Be Auctioned At Fundraising Event - Nov. 16

The Camden Rockport Middle School’s If I Built a Middle School fundraising event with Chris Van Dusen is coming up Saturday, November 16, 2:00-4:00 p.m. at the Camden Snow Bowl.

We are so excited to share the news that Chris Van Dusen has provided a one-of-a kind, ready to hang, 20” x 36” canvas print of a special image from his If I Built a School book to be auctioned off at the event! We feel extremely honored to have his generous support for our fundraising initiatives. If you are unable to attend the event, it is still possible to bid on this amazing print with this link. Please note that absentee bidding will close November 15 at 3 p.m.

We do hope you will join us for an afternoon of family fun with live music, food for purchase, an If I Built a S’mores bar, and a reading of his latest book, If I Built a School, by the bonfire. The timing of this book couldn’t have been better for our new middle school project. Come hear the fanciful ideas captured in the book and learn about our new middle school.

In addition to the auction, the afternoon will include sales of prints and T-shirts from artwork in his book, some of which will be specially modified for this event. Attendees will also be able to purchase and name a seat in the Bisbee Theater at the new Camden Rockport Middle School. Funds raised will be used for the new middle school’s athletic fields, theater lighting, playground equipment, furniture, and an art sculpture. We are nearly halfway to our goal of $500,000. We hope to see you there!

Winter Recess

We do go outside when it is cold!  At CRES, students go outside as long as the “feels like” temperature is 0 degrees Fahrenheit or higher.  Fresh air and daylight provide a good healthy break in our day and chance for free play with friends!

Students are expected to go outside for recess — weather permitting. This requires proper clothing and footwear.
5 items of winter clothing are required when the weather is cold:

  1. Coat / Jacket
  2. Hat

Clarifying End of Day Note Procedures

Here are the revised expectations that should balance our need to know where your children are going after school and your need for a manageable system.

A Dismissal Note is NOT Needed:

  • If you have a regular pick up or YMCA After Care plan on file with the homeroom teacher
  • If your child is going home on the bus

 A Dismissal Note IS Needed:

  • If plans change during the day (call the office at 236-7809)
  • If someone other than a parent/guardian is picking up your child.
  • If your child is riding a bus to anywhere other than home.  Please notice this is a change to dismissal note procedures that have been in place since the beginning of the school year.

- Every time your child rides a bus to somewhere other than home they need a note in hand to give to the bus driver.

- This includes regular, recurring plans (i.e. MRC on Monday, YMCA, friend's house)

- When writing notes for bus drivers please make sure you are very specific:

1) We need the child’s name, bus number, address they are going to

2) When going to a friend’s house, then the friend’s address and name is needed

3) All notes should be dated and legible

All notes must be written by a parent/guardian.

Transportation / bus questions can be directed to Julie Waters, Transportation Director at 236-3358 or julie.waters@fivetowns.net.

Pick up / dismissal questions can be directed to Chris Walker-Spencer, Principal, at 236-7809 or chris.walker-spencer@fivetowns.net

Did You Know . . . ?

Closure to the school day is an important part of learning.  CRES is in instructional time until the dismissal bell at 3:30pm.  When a student leaves class early, it disrupts the flow of the class, and the student misses part of the lesson.  Please avoid early dismissal of your student whenever possible.

Students, parents, and community members will have the opportunity to learn more about mental health at the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) Maine’s upcoming presentations of Ending the Silence. A presentation open to the community will be happening on Tuesday, October 29th from 7:00 pm – 8:00 pm at Camden Hills High School. Attendees at each event will hear a personal story from a presenter who has lived experience with mental illness and learn how to be a resource to those around them with a mental health need.

Through support, education, and advocacy NAMI Maine is dedicated to building better lives for the one in four Mainers who are affected by mental illness.

This event is free and open to the public.

For more information, please contact NAMI Maine’s Youth Mental Health Programs Coordinator, Libby Wright, at (207) 622-5767, ext. 2320 or ymhfa@namimaine.org.

Have You Noticed . . . . ?

Every class has been working very hard on how they transition from one place to another inside the building during these first six week of school. Hopefully you have seen our Hallways Rules posters around the school!

We strive to practice HALLS at CRES.  You can help us by encouraging “seeing HALLS” when you visit our school to volunteer, have lunch with your student, or pick up your student.
